| Thallus closely attached, 3–5 cm wide. Lobes numerous, 1–3 mm wide, distinct almost to thallus centre, branched, often with numerous toe-like laterals, compressed between main lobes, contiguous or imbricate, compressed-contorted centrally, hollow, sparingly blackened at margins or whole upper surface blackened, or with black spots or lines; apices often suffused brown; lower side of cavity black becoming grey or whitish towards tips. Upper surface convex, pale grey, without blotches, sorediate. Perforations frequent, 0.1–1.0 mm wide, rounded or becoming elliptic. Soralia rather sparse, at edges of perforations, also on surface or on short lateral lobes, becoming convex, floury or granular-sorediate, to 2 mm wide, scattered or ±coalescing. Apothecia rare, less than 4 mm wide, sessile; disc smooth, concave, epruinose, red-brown; exciple persistent, crenulate-uneven, occasionally lacerate. Ascospores 2 per ascus, 45–53 × 28–31 µm; wall 2 µm thick. CHEMISTRY: alectoronic and a-collatolic acids (UV+ ice-blue) and UV- accessory compounds; medulla K-, C-, KC+ pink, P-. | ||
